‘All Wrapped Up’ – a visit to Riverside Church
Early in December, we had the pleasure of visiting one of our recent grantees, Riverside Church in Whitstable, to see their ‘All Wrapped Up’ Christmas project in action.
Riverside Church is based in a bright, contemporary space with a community cafe at its heart. Now in its second year, the ‘All Wrapped Up’ project works with local schools and partners to provide Christmas presents and Christmas food vouchers to families facing financial hardship. They applied to The Philip and Connie Phillips Foundation for a grant in the autumn and were awarded £5,000 towards the project.
Over two days in the run up to Christmas, parents, carers and support workers are invited to the centre’s ‘Winter Wonderland’ to choose a new gift for children. They are also able to select stocking fillers, a book, a fleece blanket and will receive a goody bag containing Christmas treats and vouchers towards Christmas food.
Sean Carter, trustee of Riverside Church told us: “We are really aware of how the cost of living crisis is affecting local families in Whitstable and Herne Bay and this was confirmed to us when we received a 75% increase in referrals to our project for this Christmas. The Grant from the Philip and Connie Phillips Foundation helped us to make sure that we had sufficient gifts for all the 560 children referred to us, and sufficient funds to provide food vouchers to over 265 local families.”
The Philip and Connie Phillips Foundation makes grants to support Kent charities who demonstrate their impact on the health and wellbeing of their local community. Applications are welcomed for the forthcoming grants round and can be made via the website here. The deadline for submitting applications is Monday 19th February 2024.
Riverside Church offers a range of events and projects as well as church services. More information can be found here.
